Melchizedek

Today's Reading: Jeremiah 48-49 and Hebrews 7

How do you feel after reading today's passages? in Jeremiah 48-49 we read warnings against specific nations. Then in Hebrews 7 we read about the very mysterious figure Melchizedek.

What are we to make of the 'priestly line of Melchizedek'?

  1. Yeah, I don't get him (Melchizedek). That was a mighty confusing chapter. I have more questions after reading it than I did before!

  2. It definitely is a confusing chapter, Chris, you're right about that! Melchizedek is a priest from the Old Testament, mentioned here but also in Genesis 14 visiting with Abram. We know he was a great priest but the mystery comes from us not knowing a ton more. "Salem" was an ancient name for Jerusalem.

So what we know for sure is that the author of Hebrews is connecting this Old Testament presence (Melchizedek) to the New Testament Savior (Jesus). Other passages in the Bible connect Jesus with Adam, or Abraham.

There are many who actually think Melchizedek was an Old Testament appearance of the Christ. Interesting to consider!
